- Where is Santorini and how is the access by air and the sea?
Santorini is an island in the south part of Greece in the Aegean Sea, part of a group of islands called the Cyclades. The island was created after a huge eruption of a volcano, which occurred in 17th century B.C., which shaped the breathtaking caldera. It will take you only 45 minutes to drive from one end to the other as Santorini is only 76 km2 long.
Travel by Air:
Santorini has an international airport, code JTR. As a European traveler, you may have many options for direct flight connections to Santorini. If you are an intercontinental traveler you have options to take the connecting flight from the UK – London, France – Paris, The Netherlands – Amsterdam, Germany – Frankfurt, or directly from Athens. If you connect through Athens, there are several airlines flying from Athens to Santorini. Next to Aegean Airlines, which is the national carrier of Greece you have a choice of other low-budget Airlines like Ryanair, Volotea, or Sky Express which also offer connections between Athens and Santorini. The flight time from Athens to Santorini is approximately 45 minutes. Take off and land, let’s say. That means you can fly in. Travel by Sea:
In case you already landed in Athens and visit another popular Greek island you can travel by ferry or high-speed ferry towards Santorini. - How many nights you should stay in Santorini?
To get the real taste of Santorini you may stay at least 3 nights to be able to arrive fully, to settle down, and get loaded with the Volcanic energy which will reactivate your senses again. - How is the weather like and which month is the best to visit Santorini?
The year can be split into two main seasons, namely the warmer, dry months from April to October and that period is the best time to travel to Santorini. The hottest months being July and August and the colder, rainy season is seen in the period from November to late March. From April till October the weather generally remains stable with clear skies, bright sunshine, and very little rainfall. Overcast skies usually break after a few days, unlike in other parts of the world. Be sure to pack a sweater and jacket when traveling to Santorini in October as temperatures get cooler in the evenings. The island is subject to breezes and these are a much welcome relief during the hot summer days.
- How to get around Santorini?

- What are the main towns/villages in Santorini worth to visit?
Let’s start from the Northwest part of the island with the most picturesque village of Santorini named OIA built on the Caldera slope, offering the world-famous sunset spot. Depending on the time of the day in Oia you can stroll in the charming narrow paths with the famous white-blue houses and blue-domed churches, with pink and ocher details, “hanging” on the caldera, composing a colorful canvas that is difficult to put in words. You can visit shops, galleries, and enjoy the atmospheric cafes, bars, and restaurants. At the bottom of the village is AMMOUDI BAY where there is a row of traditional taverns by the sea with exceptional local food. You can also swim there, in wonderful crystal waters with the breathtaking caldera view above you, if you take the small path that leads to a unique diving area and the Sint Nicolas Church.
The next village is IMEROVIGLI, the base of Erossea villa, also known as “The balcony to the Aegean”, is built on the highest point of the caldera cliffs. It is situated in the north part of the island, 3 kilometers from the capital of Fira. Its position provides a magnificent view of the famous Nea Kameni volcano, the sparkling Aegean Sea, and the sunset that is out of this world. Imerovigli is an ideal choice for a private, romantic holiday filled with tranquility. It forms an impressive scenery of whitewashed houses, flowers, and cobblestone alleys. You can wander through the peaceful, paved paths away from the hustle and the bustle. It promises priceless, relaxing moments, and a view you cannot resist. Here you can unwind in the traditional taverns, luxury restaurants, and cafes with lovely terraces.
FIRA is the beautiful capital of the island and the biggest and most cosmopolitan settlement of Santorini. It is located on the western edge of the island, opposite the volcano and the two volcanic islands, Palaia Kameni and Nea Kameni that lie in the sea. Fira is a combination of natural beauty, social life, nightlife, and shopping, where you can feel the liveliness of the island and where all the action takes place.
The highest village on the whole island is PYRGOS village, providing great panoramic views of both sides of the island. It is situated on the west coast, about 8 kilometers southeast of Fira, the capital of Santorini. You can set eyes on green valleys, the vast sea, and the whole island unfolding below your feet. Pyrgos remains traditional, accordant to the Cycladic architecture. The fact that it is slightly undeveloped with narrow, winding paths and stone houses makes it adorable. Above Pyrgos is the monastery of Profitis Ilias, which is worth visiting for the 360 degrees view of Santorini.
AKROTIRI is a quiet village, it is situated on the southwest edge of Santorini, offering exquisite views of the island. It is famous for the lighthouse, one of the best in Greece, from where you can relish majestic sunsets and it is home to the archaeological prehistoric town of the Aegean that is totally worth a visit. You can walk through it and observe frescoes, artifacts, objects, furniture, advanced drainage systems, and even multi-story buildings from the Bronze Age.
PERISSA is a coastal village, located on the southeastern edge of the island. The reason most visitors come to Perissa is to take pleasure in the extraordinary beach, which is characterized by deep, dark blue waters and black lava sand. It is fully organized with sunbeds, umbrellas, a beach bars, lifeguards, and a playground and it has received the Blue Flag Award. On top of that, there are water sports facilities, diving centers, a water park, and a beach volley area to boost your experience. Perissa beach connects with Perivolos.
On the summit of the mountain Mesa Vouno are the ruins of Ancient Thera town, a prominent archaeological site with various eminent monuments. It is worthy, apart from its historical importance, for the fabulous views of Perissa and Kamari villages. The access is from KAMARI village.
Kamari is a seaside village, situated on the southeastern coast of Santorini, at the north foot of Mesa Vouno mountain. Its name comes from a small arch, which was part of an ancient sanctuary dedicated to Poseidon, standing on the south end of the beach. The only cinemas on the island are in Kamari, one of them a charming open-air cinema surrounded by trees.
